Sha Po Lang DVD Announced!

(Posted In Action Asia DVD News Martial Arts )

Sha_Po_Lang_TIFF.jpgWe knew it would be coming soon and now we know how soon ... Wilson Yip's Sha Po Lang was our run away favorite film of the Toronto Film Festival - we've got four detailed reviews in our review archive - and I've been anxiously awaiting the announcement of the Hong Kong DVD release. There's a mainland DVD already, yes, but the mainland has these rules about what criminals can get away with that means that version is pretty dramatically altered from it's intended state. The Hong Kong disc will be the world's first look at the film as it was intended and according to the Asian DVD Guide Deltamac has announced that they will release the disc sometime in January. Lovely.

Happy news spotted by the keen-eyed Logboy ...

Here's an interesting twist...I just got a newsletter in my inbox today saying that the HK cut is on DVD and available now. Nothing indicates this is a pre-order...

for that price it's got to be the mainland edition which is a LONG way from being uncut ...

It says it's PAL too, so it's not the HK release. Do they use PAL in mainland China?

Ah man,I'm all over the HK disc.

ALL OVER IT!

That "UNCUT China DVD" is not uncut at all. It's still cut. It's just that the true ending to the film is presented like an alternate ending option.

Daniel- I suspected this much. I appreciate the clarification.

Were the fight scenes cut on the mainland version? I dl'd it a while ago and I thought the Wu vs Donnie and the Sammo/donnie fights were extremely short.

I think if anything was cut from the Jack vs. Ma fight it was at the end and something on the order seeing the weapon do its damage.

The Ma vs Po was cut on the order of a couple minutes..the ending was drastically changed.

There were also some other cuts made as well- Chan's squad bust in or a group of Po's men..that was cut; Jack's face off with Lok was also cut.

That's all I can remember from the top of my head.

IMDB lists the running time of this film when played at TIFF as 97 minutes. Yesasia lists the HK disk as having a 94 minute running time. Is this another chopped version?!

» Posted by Marten at January 4, 2006 12:08 PM

No. The chopped versions are around 88 min. I have the plain jane just the movie on DVD and its run time is 92...couldn't tell what the extra 2 minutes are..
