When the Brothers Weinstein made their exit from Miramax speculation ran rampant that this may mean that the locks would finally come off the Miramax vault. Bob and Harv had this thing for buying films that they had no intention of releasing, you see, so there are stacks of titles just sitting and collecting dust. Now that Disney has been dipping into the Miramax books and the phantom economics have been found out it appears as though Disney is doing exactly what many film fans hoped they would: getting films out of the vault and on to DVD to try and recoup some of their investment.
The first of the titles announced are Zu Warriors and Undertaking Betty, both of which will release March 7th. Now I'm not going to get worked up about either of these titles - I've seen Zu and it's a huge mess in my opinion - but I am quite excited about what this could mean. The Shaw titles? Tears of the Black Tiger? A DVD for Jeunet's Delicatessen? There are literally dozens of good films in that vault, so keep your eyes open ...
Thanks to Mary for the pointer.
Todd: Has there been any follow-up word on whether or not "Tears of the Black Tiger" will find its way to US dvd distribution?
Nothing yet but you can be sure we'll make a lot of noise about it if it happens.
