(Posted In Asia Film News Martial Arts USA and Canada )

tyg-poster-01small.jpgWill people never learn?

It's sadly official ... Screen Daily reported today that the Weinsteins have bought all US rights to Tom Yum Goong. There goes any chance of seeing it before the end of the decade ...

It's bad news all right.
The film is getting a simeltaneous release across Asia and it happens to be the most eagerly awaited martial arts movie of this year.

I think Sensasian and other sites still sell these movies after the devils, excuse me, the Weinsteins buy the rights to them.

Does this mean Colin is scrambling to find a replacement film for MM?

Shouldn't there be something in international law that prevents these guys from getting another Asian film?

GAH! NOOOOO!!! Damn. This just sucks the big fat radish. Todd, was this what you were alluding to in the TIFF thread on the Forum? If so, this is exactly the movie I wondered if it might end up in Satan's handbasket. SUCK!

Maybe things will be different? It's a new company and they aren't connected to Disney anymore. Maybe they'll actually need to release it in a timely manner because they have little else to release? Just trying to remain a little hopeful for a North American release sometime before the end of say, 2006? Anyway, I'm confused by this. I thought the French company (not Luc Besson's) had the worldwide rights outside the UK and Asia. Guess not.

The French company (TF1) is an international sales company, not a distributor. They buy the international rights purely for the purpose of re-selling them ... the Weinsteins have bought all of North America, plus South Africa, Scandanavia and a handful of other territories ...

if it's any help, the film will release soon in Korea, with a DVD release coming later. I don't know if there will be English Subs, but they usually do it with non-Japanese/HK titles.

SIGH... does the world never learn? I do hope that, as Wise Kwai says, their new company will be forced to deliver the goods in a timely manner. I worry more about them hacking the film to bits in order to, "make this sh** work." Damn money can change the eyes of the most noble. Lets hope that we get our hands on decent DVD release if they do pull their old antics!
ciao,
CHAI

"OOh! let's jump on the bandwagon bro!" the Weinstiens strike again! I'm sure it will filter thru on DVD well before the cinema release in the States, I picked up Hero on DVD before the cinema release in the UK, same with House of Flying Daggers. Ong-Bak has a myriad of versions flying around on import all for great prices. The studios have been forced to release films at the cinema and on DVD earlier and earlier thru people power, be that bootleggers or import versions!
Have faith! it'll happen!
