Korean News in Brief: July 29 [Box Office, Dongmakgol, The Savior, Park Sang-Won, Desperation]

(Posted In Asia Film News )

geumjastreet.jpgPark Chan-Wook's 친절한 금자씨 (Sympathy For Lady Vengeance), right after being officially invited to the Competition section in Venice, flew to the top of the box office on its first day on release. The film sold 250,000 tickets nationwide (82,000 in Seoul) to score the top opening of the year, after reaching the top online presales record for domestic films earlier this week at more than 80%. Even though "Lady" opened on 370 screens across the nation, the number is expected to increase by the end of the month, reaching at least 410 screens.
Added with the fact the film has already recouped most of its 4.2 Billion Won budget via foreign sales (3 Billion Won to Japan, another half billion through sales to over 20 countries), it looks like "Lady" will be the dominant force at the box office for this summer.

Riding on its popularity in South Korea and the current mood after North Korea returned to the six party talks, 웰컴투 동막골 (Welcome To Dongmakgol) will have a press screening in Pyeongyang. The film shows both Koreas trying to work together to overcome mutual difficulties, and is expected to be shown for both press and government officials as soon as the six party talks complete.

Shin Yi, who appeared in just about EVERY comedy released in Korea in the last two years (either as a cameo or supporting role) hit two birds with a stone, landing her first ever leading role, and the first 100,000,000 Won guarantee of her career. She will star in the romantic comedy 구세주 (The Savior) as a female prosecutor called Eun-Joo. Kim Jung-Woo will be the (first-time) director, and the film is expected to start shooting in the middle of August, for an early 2006 release.

Park Sang-Won will return to theater in the latest project by Jang Jin, entitled 세일즈맨의 죽음 (Death of a Salesman), showing at the Dongrang Art Center in Namsan, Seoul from September 24 through October 9. This is his first stage play in over 2 years since he starred in 한여름밤의 꿈 (Midnight Summer's Dream).
Jang, who's waiting to see his latest two productions debut, 웰컴 투 동막골 (Welcome To Dongmakgol) and 박수칠 때 떠나라 (The Big Scene) will direct, and also part of the cast are veteran Shin Gu, Jeon Yang-Ja and Jeon Mu-Seong.
Park became famous in the 90s with a string of very popular TV Dramas, including classics such as 여명의 눈동자 (Eyes of Dawn), 모래시계 (The Sandglass) and 그대 그리고 나 (He and I).

The action film, shooting entirely in the city of Busan, is the new film by Choi Ho, the director of 바이준 (Bye June) and 후아유 (Who R U). The audition, taking place from August 1 till the 17th, will pick two actors for the lead roles, both required to speak the local Gyungsangdo dialect. The film will start shooting right after the audition in September, preparing for a Mid 2006 release.

"2005.07.31: Lady Vengeance posts biggest opening ever One could sense there was a lot of pent-up demand to see Park Chan-wook's new film Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, but I think few people expected it to open quite this big. Between Thursday and Sunday night the film has sold an estimated 1.5 million tickets (~$9.5m) throughout Korea, breaking the all-time opening record set by Taegukgi last year. Looking through the web, viewer reactions seem to be mostly positive, although there are a few scattered complaints. Based on this, the film can likely look forward to continued success in the coming weeks."
