Ooooh ... Yuric in Russia, the same guy responsible for dropping us that stellar 9th Company trailer a couple days back, just dropped in a hugely detailed report on Day Watch AKA Nochnoy Dozor 2 AKA the sequel to Russian fantasy blockbuster Night Watch.
If you, like me, were wondering why the first film spent so much time on the woman with the curse spiral your answer is here. The way Yuric describes it this film is going to operate on a simply massive scale - much, much larger than the first - and some of the action sequences sound spectacular. Unfortunately it also sounds as though Fox Searchlight has muscled their way in to some of the creative decisions and have pushed the producers to drop their planned Russian-produced conclusion to the trilogy, thus forcing them to jam a lot more story than intended into this one.
Check the Day Watch trailer out here - that's a bloody huge download, incidentally - then read on for the details.
MAJOR spoilers follow. Don't continue if you don't want to know.
"What is known about the storyline so far:
Egor, Anton's son, turned to be Great Other, who chose darkness. But
Forces of Light have found the Great Sorceress - Svetlana, who was able to destroy the city with the funnel she created when she cursed herself. Now she is learning her powers and is prepared for the battle with Egor. The problem is, Anton fell in love with Svetlana and he wants to stop the fight between two people he loves most - his son and his beloved. The only way to do it is to find the Chalk of Fate and to rewrite Book of Destiny with it, so Egor would go to the Light side.
According to director, there will be a flashback to 1939, when joint
expedition of Dark and Light Others are about to open Tamerlane's tomb to retrieve Chalk of Fate from there, althrough it is believed, that if the tomb is opened, a world war will start immediately. But members of the expedition want to open the tomb, take the Chalk, rewrite history with it, so there will be no war, and take it with them. Well, they open the tomb - and it's empty.
One scene is described as "Birthday of Antichrist". Egor is turning
13, and all the prominent Dark Others come to celebrate him. A lot of
famous Russian politicians, music stars etc. agreed to make cameo
appearances for that scene.
Rights to distribute Night Watch 2 worldwide are already bought by Fox Searchlight
Night Watch 2 will feature more than 40 minutes of CGI - a record
number for a post-Soviet production.
According to producers, the biggest moment of the film will be final
battle between forces of Light and Darkness at the center of Moscow, during which some of the Moscow landmark buildings will be reduced to dust. One of them is Cosmos hotel

Fox Searchlight pressured Russian Production Company to stop on the
second movie. It means that there will be no trilogy - just two
movies. And since Night Watch 2 was shot simultaneously with Night Watch 1, it also explains why the delay with second movie - they
are reshooting half of it and adding some storylines, they planned for the 3rd movie, to have some closure. It is not clear at this point what American "Night Watch" will be - remake, continuation of the second movie or stand-alone entry.
According to Zhanna Friske (http://www.hot.ee/caps2004/zanna7.jpg),
who played Alisa in the first film, in one scene she will be driving a sport car vertically on some high-rise building's wall, and then through the corridors.
Most of the product placement in the movie will be from Nokia."
When when when? I saw the first one at the Amsterdam Fantastic Film festival (the Fox reel with those amazing subtitles that play an important graphical role: sublime!), I have the official Russian DVD (unfortunately without the great creative subtitles in it, just plain text). I cannot WAIT for the sequel to come out. It is jabberwockalicious!
(Any word on a Fox DVD by the way?)
The movie hasn't started playing here yet. I believe it opens in a limited release this Friday. A DVD is a ways off.
Everyone mentions the subtitles on the Fox version, but what exactly are they like?
Well: they are very cool subtitles. For example: when somebody gets a nosebleed in the first night watch under water, the letters appear like blood in the water, and dissolve. Very well done, not tacky at all. When somebody screams, they shake. When somebody is on a swingm, she swings through the, They add a translation layer (what all subtitles do) but they also add a graphical layer that is not only highly original but fits remarkably well. Seriously! You have to see it I guess. I have some trouble describing it properly since English isn't my mothertongue. But you get what I mean right? It sounds cheecy but when you see it it will make sense. Most people are pleasantly surprised. (It surprised me that nobody tried to do something different with subtitles before actually). Blablabla. :-)
Not too long ago, some original subtitling was done:
BUBBA HO TEP - the Egyptian Sigils dancing through the air when the Mummy speaks...
Or rather faux-egyptian humourous titles if you hit pause on the DVD...
Has the release of Night Watch been pushed back? Anyone?
Yeah, they've pushed it back. November now, I think.
Nochnoy dozor-2
1 january 2006. may be...
Hmm, I dont like point of view of this film. It haz nothing to do with book itself. And in a fack this story is trying follow just the first book of three. Jegor to be great other? Funny. Book of fate as a physical material? Same. I found myself hate idea of the film. Book is wonderfull. Film something else. Dont name in Nightwatch. Couse it has nothing to do with spirit of its meaning.
Jeez... those subttitles sound awful. The film can't work simply as a series of graphic images if we are to submerge ourselves into, sumit ourselves to its geography and spatial reality. What a bad idea. Sounds like Man on Fire, and nothing deserves that comparison, surely?
I saw it on the opening night in BsAs the subtitles played a great part in the film, unlike any subtitles I have ever seen. I was floored by this film, and how it is was not "Americanized" unfortunatelly after reading the above, when FOX muscled RPC to not due the third and cram everything onto the second, a bad call on their part. I am still waiting to see Dnevnoy dozor or "Night watch 2" regardless of what happens.
I do wish that even though the films are out already there should be a third part, staying true to not only the book but the original idea. It's the money but the respect for both the fans and film goers.
I've watched night watch many times since it came out in Russian.and then in the american and the german versins of it.the translation was great, but unfortunatelly an important part of it was missing - namely the one with the virgin and the curse as a whole.i don't know how they wanna connect the second one to it.hopefully, there will be a third one as well.but as usual the stupid americans will spoil everithing.i'm so sorry about it.have anyone watched a good movie recently?i haven't.and now reading this spoiled also my pretaste for day watch.well matbe one day thinks will look better.
I've just seen Dnevnoy Dozor.. It's really great! I'm so happy to know russion language..but still i think it'd be hard to understand the movie for others.. I mean.. if u're not russion u won't understand some things, coz' only russion can do it. Generally, second part is better than the first one!
Well, first of all, here in Peru is a little difficult to find foreign cinema rather than the american. I loved this movie the fist time I've seen it and like the Anton-Svetlana couple. I've read that in the second movie Anton and Olga change bodies and he make love with Svetlana in Olga's body. mmm that sounds very gay... Could somebody explain to me this confussion? To my mail: andrea_fernandez87@hotmail.com
i saw night watch and didn really like it,but wen i saw day watch in russian it was sooooo damnn coooool. u u u u u u u u uu uu
hohohohohoh
I have just watched the First Episode of Night Watch
and Damn was it good, I just wish Fox would keep their nose out
and let them do a third film,
well all the best from the UK adn peace to u all
Isaw Nightwatch opening day in california. it upsets me that some of us americans have to dispense other cultures entertainment perspectives for the sake of our own. we already made constantine. Nightwatch should be made completely from russia with love.
Just watch Nightwatch on Film4. Absolutely excellent film. The subtitles are utterly gorgeous. They don't interfere with the film itself, but rather add to your immersion in the atmosphere. Because they are so well done, you often don't notice them consciously. A few time I just thought "That felt weird and spooky but I don't know why" and rewound for another look before noticing that the main character just stepped in front of his subtitles. They give you, the viewer, the feeling that you are seeing something that normal people don't see, almost as if you are one of the Others. Beautiful. I especially liked the vampires call, which appears initially as normal subtitles and then fades to red and finally turns into a wisp of blood in the air by the person they are calling. Very subtle, but adds something to the film. I almost felt sorry for the people watching it without the subtitles.
