As my child has grown - and he has done rather a lot of that - I have learned to categorize 'children's entertainment' in the following manner. There is the utter brain and soul sapping crap. A great deal falls into this category. There is the mind numbing for the parents but strangely entrancing, and apparently quite good for, the child. There is the mediocre. There are the solid films made for children but which parents can also enjoy. And there are the classic stories that cross all age boundaries but, since they contain close to nothing in the way of sex or swearing, tend to be marketed largely to children. Brad Bird makes films in that final category. So does Miyazaki. The Goonies definitely belongs there. And I am increasingly thinking that Zathura is going to fall into that final class. This thing just looks fun.
