The trailer for Welcome to Dongmakgol - a Korean film based on an actual event in the Korean War that saw troops from the North, South and USA all stranded together in a remote village over the winter - just appeared on the Cine21 website this morning.
I've been back and forth on this film pretty much every time something new has come out about it ... the initial premise and the announcement that Joe Hisaishi, best known for his work with Takeshi Kitano and Studio Ghibli, would be providing the score had me very excited. Then some stills turned up on the official site and I realized that they were going to play this for comedy which left a horrible sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. But now that I've seen the trailer I'm actually feeling quite positive about it again. It's horribly sappy, yes, but it's sap with style and a healthy dose of irony. Just wait for the shot of the bombs raining down around a soldier with a big, stupid grin on his face as Hisaishi's score ramps the emotion way beyond any reasonable level ...
The trailer is streaming only, but it's high quality and the stream runs pretty quick. Check it here.

I finally watched the movie. And I must say that the movie really does not live up to its hype... I am afraid that Korean movie industry as whole as fallen into a huge mannerism at this point. I don't think I should talk about the movie here... Since I don't want to write spoilers...
but, being a fan of Mr. Jang (the movie is based on his screenplay), It was a very disappointing experience...
