I was simply ecstatic when I heard that Luc Besson's Europa Corp had picked up global rights to Wisit Sasanatieng's Citizen Dog. He's virtually unknown on these shores thanks to Miramax buying and burying his brilliant debut Tears of the Black Tiger, but Sasanatieng is easily one of the most visually inventive directors in the world today. His stuff is just gorgeous and I'd been lusting after Citizen Dog ever since first stumbling across the website. Though the website has disappeared, swallowed up by an information page for the company that designed it, you can still find the trailers here and here.
Anyway ... the Europa buy meant that I might actually have a chance to catch Citizen Dog on the big screen and that was enough for me, but it looks as though the relationship has gone deeper. Screen Daily is reporting that Europa has come aboard to co-produce Sasanatieng's next film, titled Nam Prix, "a food-based tale, it melds an ancient myth with a famous Thai dish and his script was selected for the Pusan Promotion Plan in 2002."
The film is slated to start filming in early 2006 for a late 2006 release ...
