They haven't started getting into the major premieres yet, but the Toronto International Film Festival announced the first twenty films for the 2005 edition of the festival with festival co-director Noah Cowan describing these twenty as "our programmers' personal favourites from other major international film festivals".
On the list: Cannes winners L'Enfant and Cache, Alexander Sokurov's The Sun, Hou Hsiao Hsien's Three Times, Lars Von Trier's Manderlay, Wim Wenders' Don't Come Knocking, Tsai Ming-Liang's The Wayward Cloud, Eric Khoo's Be With Me, Vimukthi Jayasundara's The Forsaken Land, Carlos Reygadas' Battle In Heaven (one of the big buzz films at Cannes), Hany Abu-Assad's Paradise Now, Mohammad Rasoulof's Iron Island, Cristi Puiu's The Death Of Mr. Lazarescu, Laïla Marrakchi's Marock, Wang Xiaoshuai's Shanghai Dreams, Mark Dornford-May's Carmen In Khayelitsha, the Vinterberg / Von Trier collaboration Dear Wendy, Rakhshan Bani-Etemad and Mohsen Abdolvahab's Gilaneh, Mike Mills' Thumbsucker, and Noah Baumbach's The Squid and the Whale.
Not a bad list at all ... I count at least six or seven must see's in there and the festival has another 230 films or so left to announce ... going to be a busy year ...
