I lied. Well, not intentionally or literally. I said that the only other recommendation for a recent British Comedy series was 'The Smoking Room' (still to be announced for DVD). Wrong.
I saw every episode of Paul Whitehouses' show 'Help' even though it was hidden away at some odd day of the week at some odd time (Sunday 10pm I think, when the typical night for comedy is Friday 9pm onwards). Six half-hour episodes, with Chris Langham as 'Peter' the therapist, dealing with Paul Whitehouses array of oddball characters, each with their own strange behaviour.
Much more detailed information to be found at the ever-helpful BBC page on the show, here.
There's a short streaming clip at the bottom of that page, and profiles that are linked from here to background on Langham and Whitehouse. Wonder how familiar USA audiences are with Paul Whitehouse 1990s hit 'The Fast Show', which was huge in its' time? Or 'Happiness', his more recent comedy-drama?. Both great pieces, the first slightly dated now, the second I haven't really watched much of... both available on DVD already.
I watched this series when it was on TV in the UK in early 2005. It was brilliant. Paul Whitehouse is a genius - I can't believe this show wasn't given a more prominent timeslot. Classic BBC comedy - funny, but with an edge of realism and a hint of sadness thrown in.
Paul Whitehouse really is extraordinary in this series, playing some 25 parts, using facial prosthetics to create each character. His facial expressions and sense of timing are first rate. I'd seriously rate this as one of the best British comedies in recent years - right up there with The Office and other outstanding comedies.
I forgot to ask - when is the DVD going to be released? I remember hearing a rumour in late 2005 that it would be released in October 2006 - but I've not seen anything since. Any ideas?
Does anyone have this DVD? Does it exist? I am a huge fan of John Morton and would love to find a copy of this. Even if you just have VHS copies I would love to get them. Anyone? Please?
Thanks.
