Donnie Yen is very excited about his next movie Sha Po Lang. He believes that SPL is his most representative work to date and that none of his previous works would ever surpass. And being able to complete this one independently he has been able to put as much of himself into it as possible. What some may not know was that it was a little martial arts flick from Thailand that served as a key inspiration for his work on this movie. Donnie saw Ong Bak during pre-production for SPL and realized that this was exactly what the movie industry in Hong Kong had been lacking for years. But that was about all the credit he was going to give.

In my opinion, the success of that film should be contributed to several factors. The main factor is that we have not seen such a film in action movie market in such a long time. In fact, many contents of this movie, we do not talk about its script, only talking about its kung fu contents, Ong-bak just includes lots of elements that we used before, if we look into this film, into its action style, there is not many variable ones, only some punch or kick of our ancient styles, although called as Mauy Thai, its moves are somewhat limited. Of course, I quite appreciate that actor [Tony Jaa], his action is excellent, however as a whole unit, there is no new fighting styles in this movie, no innovation at all.
In China we have many martial arts talents in recent years, so this actor is not special for me. This is just a question of time; we have not made this kind of movie in a long time. Especially in recent years, our action film is in a big lag, there is no new kung fu talent, I mean, the talent for a kung fu movie who is well trained in the martial arts field, even if these kind of people exist, maybe they do not have chance to show their talent. This is a market trend. DonnieYen.us
Having motivation and this realization, Donnie claims one of his goals for Sha Po Lang was to ‘challenge’ Ong Bak. With the movie having all the elements that stamped an action movie as a Hong Kong action film, it would merely be a process of using those elements for Sha Po Lang and meeting another goal- taking them to the next level. Having laid the smackdown against Ong Bak Donnie still has a couple hurdles to overcome.
1. As it stands right now, SPL will not be shown in mainland China. There is speculation that this is due to the movie's triad content. A similar conflict is happening with Johnny To and his latest triad picture, Election, a film that promises to be more lethal and violent than SPL.
2. Uh... fans of Ong Bak? Right now Ong Bak is an action fans Holy Grail, our saving grace. True, Donnie is right that it was exactly what was NOT happening in Hong Kong and is very similar to Hong Kong action films of old but it still kicks incredible ass.
3. The action film market in Europe is on the rise - HUGE! With folks like Luc Besson/Louis Leterrier dishing out awesome stuff like Danny the Dog/Unleashed, David Belle and Cyril Rafaelli and their Le Parkour styles in Banlieue 13, and Leterrier and Corey Yuen finishing up Transporter 2, JUST to mention a few. There are other countries that picked up the slack and have run very well with the ball as well. If you want dominance in the action film market that is a lot of competition.
Understand, I am a big Donnie Yen fan but not a fan of Donnie Yen movies. Say what you will but I have always felt that Donnie Yen is at his best when he is doing something for someone else. Anything that he has done on his own, I have felt, is sub par. Dude, it better deliver and by all accounts I have heard it does. Will SPL help bring about Asian dominance in the action film market once again? Time will tell.
I don't give a damn about $, dominance, all I know is Ong bak is hugely overrated, and that The transporteur sucked big time (lame action, horribly filmed, Besson style...what's with Besson outside France? This guy has produced almost only bad bad bad bad bad movies...and Banlieue 13, come on, that was so bad...).
But I wanna see Danny the dog, that's for sure...
By the way, the fight between Jet Li and Donnie Yen in Once upon a time in China 2 is pure genius, 1000000 times better than all Ong bak. That's not just my opinion, that's a fact!!!!!!!!!
I'm pretty sure Wilson Yip (who has done some AWESOME work in the past with Bullets Over Summer, Bio-Zombie, and Juliet in Love) is in charge of this one, and not Donnie. I'm not a fan of Donnie's directing either.
Donnie's credited as action director, working with long time collaborator Kenji Tanigaki..if it wasn't for his online blog, few people would have known how shooting early on was going.
Damn, hit post before I wanted to add that his directing needs work...seems to fall short on his quest to tell a story. Can't comment on filming techniques, I know shit from shinola when it comes to that, but the overall pkg fails to deliver story-wise..too many disconnects happen.

Dear oh dear, this has certainly rubbed people up the wrong way.
Axleu, you think OUATIC 2 is better than ong bak! Seriously, its typical of what most movies in that time period where like, gravity defying leaps, bordering on flying, whilst I enjoyed the Yen Li fight, its not the best work of either artist. Li surpassed all previous offerings with Fist Of Legend, his best work in my opinion. And Yen is right in a way, ong bak is amazing, but it is formulaic and would be rubbish if not for the action scenes. Ja is fantastically talented athletically, but didnt choreograph the fights, where as yen has done both. Ong bak was huge breath of fresh air for the industry, but I think SPL will be fantastic, Yen is known for his self confidence, but he has backed it up on film. We need new innovative ideas, or the martial arts movie will fall back into the Van Damme era, badly scripted, badly directed but with a few good fights, we need more, and Yen is offering more.
And another thing, both the Transporter and Banlieue 13 are excellent action movies.
My comment is all of them Jet Li, Jacky Chan ,Donny Yen or Panom Yeerum (Ong Bak ) are the best on there actions skills.
Just Ong Bak is the brand new film original film from theiland and thai style it is some thing is difference so what ever.( PS I hate chinese but i like chinese film and I am pround to be thai)
In SPL, I saw the old fat guy and the skinny jerk flighing together make me laugh 'coz of its stupid moves for 40 seconds. This movie is very bad and we should not spend any cent to this sucker, besides, donney yen sucks!!!
Hello everyone
I truly enjoy kung fu movies when they have great choreography like IRON MONKEY, FIST OF LEGEND, etc. The thing I would personally like to see is the combination of talent in filmation. You need martial arts masters to choreograph fight scenes, but you also need to have film masters to tell a great story like was done in SHAW SHANK REDEMPTION, as well as great cinematography masters. If this isn't done, then we'll continue to see sub par kung fu films. Another thing that I think should be done is the elemination of wirework in martial arts films. To me, the "high jumping" special effects ruin a fight scene. A fight scene is so much better when there are little or no special effects involved. Of course you need to have certain wirework involved for safety reason, but short of that, a fight scene is more captivating when it seems real. I can't stand it when people fly in the air or walk on water or jump from the ground to a roof top. It turns the fight scene into a comedy. I could understand having it if it's a film like KUNG FU HUSTLE, but when it's a story that is supposed to serious, "wirework" should not be used if possible. The fight choreography should be more than enough.
How's it going everybody -

To me, the "high jumping" special effects ruin a good fight scene. It's like having a tastey meal and then biting into a frozen piece of meat. A fight scene is so much better when there are little or no special effects involved. Of course, you need to have certain wirework involved for safety reasons, but short of that, a fight scene is more captivating when it seems real. I could understand having it if it's a film like KUNG FU HUSTLE, but when it's a story that's supposed to be serious, "wirework" should be kept to a minimum. The fight choreography, if it's done well, should be more than enough. Regarding Donnie Yen, he should stick with the fight choreography team he was involved with in IRON MONKEY, without the wirework, of course, and he needs a talented movie director. Donnie Yen is an amazing talent himself. He just needs to surround himself with the right people. His production team should identify talented directors of movies that actually do their job storywise and try to arrange for Donnie to work with them if possible, but that's just my opinion.
Fist of Legend set the bar.
Ong Bak raised it much, much higher.
Tom Yum Goong breaks the action bar and throws it in the bin.
They are after all only movies, not rocket science.
But thats just my opinion.
"And another thing, both the Transporter and Banlieue 13 are excellent action movies."
No.
"Axleu, you think OUATIC 2 is better than ong bak!"
Yes.
