German Film Prize Nominees Announced

(Posted In)

filmpreis.jpgI'll confess that until recently my knowledge of the current German film scene was pretty much limited to Tom Tykwer of Run Lola Run fame, but having been mightily impressed by the German films I screened recently at the Philadelphia Film Festival I'm working to correct that. And here's a good place to start: the nominees for the 2005 German Film Prizes have been announced and there are a few familiar titles. Check out the full list here, or reaed on for my own thoughts and links.

Hitler drama Der Untergang (AKA The Downfall) is surprisingly under-represented given the international buzz and Oscar nomination, with the winner of the most nominations actually being a Jewish comedy of errors Alles Auf Zucker. Yep, you heard that right: a Jewish comedy leading the German film awards. Go figure. Hit the US Downfall page here and the Zucker page here.

Making me very happy by drawing a solid number of noms is Kammerflimmern, AKA Off Beat, which was one of my favorite films in Philly, coming in a close second to UNO. I know Canfield will second me when I say this is one fantastic film on all counts. Hit that one here.

Some interesting films drawing solo noms, including Star Trek spoof Raumschiff Surprise, hitman thriller Lautlos (AKA Soundless), and Agnes Und Seine Bruder, which Svet linked to just yesterday. Wim Wenders' Land of Plenty turns up a few times as well.

There's lots more in the list, so go check 'em out ...
