Final Fantasy 7 : Advent Children. R2 Japan UMD / DVD September 14th 2005.

(Posted In)

ff7.jpegTetsuya Namura has officially announced the firm release date (finally) for the CGI movie based entirely in a more familiar Final Fantasy world - Advent Children. Long know about, the internet is littered with screenshots and a few trailers (tip - google), but there has always been a confusion as to wether this would be some kind of interactive DVD experience. Still might be, but at least we know now the Japanese release date and that it will be both a UMD and a DVD release. English Subtitles - fingers crossed.

Personally, i really like 'The Spirits Within' but it had little familiar to grasp onto for a FF-based movie. This one is set withing the worlds (it seems) and with the characters of FF VII, so it should bring back the audience turned onto the series at that point but whom have drifted away since. There should be more details arriving soon as this will be heavily promoted at E3 (...years biggest game event). Expect a nice limited edition, perhaps some new footage, and an American release to become firmer soon.

I've been stoked about this for years. I absolutely love the look of the trailers, and the CGI seems lightyears beyond The Spirits Within.

i've been waiting for this flick for way too long. ff7 was the first ff i ever played about 10 years ago (that is a bad thing and a good thing) and i've always wanted to see a film made from it. it's about time. those trailers have been tiding me over for the past couple of years and i'm about to snap if i don't get to see the whole thing pretty soon.

Pricing and LE details for the Japanese version. Damn that LE costs an arm and a leg - guess I'm not going to get it after all :(

hmmm. best way to tell for sure will be to see the USA specs and prices. i think the mastering on the USA disc should be the same quality as the R2 J so its probably not necessary to pay the $45 for the standard edition from japan even...

Both discs are rumored to feature [...] a 30 minute video that compresses the story of the FFVII game into a short movie version.

That sounds like a pretty cool extra feature.

You can preorder these at Yesasia (the LE is a whopping $344.49 there!) or at cdjapan (the big LE isn't listed yet). There's also a first pressing release available that has a "special packaging".

A bit miffed with this release actually. It would seem that the Japanese discs don't have English subtitles and even if they did, the extras are a little poor - I would have liked to see a second DVD with a nice making of but it seems that there isn't one.. or there is one but it's in the insanely expensive LE.
With luck the R1 release will be interlaced or otherwise just plain horrible compared to the Japanese release (Innocence cover art anyone?). It's a bit too common that most of the anime/anime-like titles are given a sub-standard release in the US.

If someone is curious about the contents of the LE, there are some pics at http://www.jp.playstation.com/dvd/ffvii/index.html courtesy of http://ff7ac.hotcafe.to.

Definetly not worth that $300 in my opinion. If the figure had been a well detailed resin or coldcast figure, then it might have justified the price but not now. Interesting how I've seen some exquisite amateur sculptures from Japan but these things coming with Limited Edition DVD releases are pretty poor in comparison.
The only interesting part with the LE is that bonus dvd, wonder if it will be available on the R1 release(s)?
Sony better release some details on the R1 this month, so I can decide if I should order the normal Japanese version or not (my Yesasia voucher is going to expire! ;).

Seems like Play-asia copied the images to their page so you can view them there as well: http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-a7-70-q1f.html
