Dark Water. by Hideo Nakata (2002). R1 USA DVD (ADV Films) June 21st 2005.

(Posted In)

darkwaterr1.jpegADV Films have announed the date for the upcoming R1 USA DVD of Hideo Nakatas' superb 'Dark Water', which they had recently show in the USA at cinemas too.

Based on Kojio Suzukis books, as was Nakatas original 'Ringu', hopefully most will have already seen this stunning work. If not, and you think this might be a step-up from the old R3 HK disc, it's worth every penny. Both the 'Ringu' and 'Dark Water' books are also available in English translations.

I'm not a fan of the tacked on happy ending epilogue, but I love this film up until then ... it's got one of the best reveal shots I've ever seen ...

I think its a decent and entertaining film with some nice cinematography but it didnt scare me at any point. I think Im becoming immune to horror films :(

I'm curious, what's the reveal shot that you like? It's been a while since I watched the movie.

*** SPOIL-O-MATIC ***

Don't read this if you don't want to know the end.

The sequence where they reveal that the body is stashed in the roof top cistern just killed me the first time I saw it ... there were inklings, then you have the scene where the mother is climbing the ladder intercut with the daughter pouring her bath down in the apartment ... my first viewing went like this ... "Oh .... she's in the water tak .... oh ... she's in the tank ..." Glob of hair shoots out of tap "GAAAAH!!! She's in the tank!" Loud banging noise from inside tank "THE TANK!!! THE TANK!!!" .... it was just a beautiful build of mood and a fantastic job of intercutting ... the reveal hit EXACTLY as I was putting things together myself and was just flawlessly executed ...

I think this is Hideo Nakata's only other good film after Ring.

I loved this the 1st time, not as good the 2nd time (even in a sold-out festival screening). Good timing for this R1 DVD because the Hollwood remake (directed by Walter Salles and starring Jennifer Connelly) is finally due for release from Touchstone on July 8. Trailer looks remarkably like the original, only with people like John C. Reilly and Pete Postlewaite showing up. It's another PG-13 rated horror movie from exec. prod. Roy Lee, Friend/Exploiter of All Asian Movies That Could Possibly Be Remade by Hollywood and Turned Into a Really Easy Payday for Me.
