Thomas Haden Church Cast As Spider-Man 3 Villain

(Posted In)

thomas_haden_church_1.jpgI'm a little underwhelmed by this bit of news ...

The Hollywood Reporter has gotten word that Wings and Sideways actor Thomas Haden Church has been cast as the villain for Spider-Man 3. There's been no word on which villain he'll be playing but the Sandman and Venom rumors continue unabated and he certainly has the look for either of those.

You could do worse than Church, but personally I think his performance in Sideways was hugely over rated ... that film was carried on the backs of Paul Giamatti and Virginia Madsen, mostly Giamatti, with everyone else just along for the ride ... He's no Dafoe or Molina, that's for sure ...

Todd,

Have to agree, I mean the only thing I remember actually seeing him in was Dharma and Gregg years ago, and he didnt exactly strike me as the villan type. Granted you could do worse, but you could do a whole lot better!

I really like this choice. Have you guys seen the Specials? Church has already done tongue-in-cheek superhero stuff, so I think he'll fit right in against Spidey. Now, I wonder if they'll be shooting in Chicago again...

HOBGOBLIN? first thing that came to mind when i saw that pic.

hobgoblin, vulture, scorpion, rhino, venom, carnage...take your pick cause kingpin, green goblin and doc oc are already taken.

I really like Church, dating back to his NED AND STACEY days; it's hard to see him in this sort of a role, though. The previous Spidey films, while possessing good senses of humor, weren't really too tongue-in-cheek, IMO. I don't know what approach Church will take with the material, but I'll admit I'm intriguied by his being cast.

Guess I'm trying to say I'm doing my best to reserve judgement until the film unspools...

Nice to see no one's exactly waiting for Jackal or The Lizard to make an appearance in the Spider-Man series yet.

Heh, just thought I'd put those names up on the radar in my annoying way considering Jackal is one of the biggest foes in the SM mythology (unfortunately, for all that clone crap.) Can't see Haden Church playing anyone other than Carnage, though, and even then that's a bit of a stretch. I like his acting, but still.

The Lizard was already hinted at in the 2nd film and Curt Connors already has an actor ie Dylan Baker so Lizards out of the running aswell.

I say mysterio. I just can't see him as venom or carnage... at all. It would almost be a waste.

Who needs superpowers?!? He could take out Spidey with just that smile alone. Damn!

If Raimi is directing then Carnage and Venom have very little chance of being in the film. Raimi has said that he doesnt like the characters.

I think you should have venom & carnagae because they are matched to eachothers powers so It will be more exiting that is why i think you thould use venom&carnage for your villans in your movie!!!!!
