I am so incredibly conflicted about this film ... it's not enough that I find Ridley Scott a maddeningly inconsistent director at the best of times but the man's got to go and a) make a remarkably wrong-headed film given the current political climate and b) make it look so good .... I'm not sure when this particular trailer came out, but I've just stumbled across the international trailer for Scott's Kingdom of Heaven here. It's shorter and not in nearly as pretty a format as the the first trailer was but based on the visuals in these two trailers Kingdom could be the best looking thing Scott has ever done ... I just hope he stays away from pro-western rah-rah in the midst of all the crusading ...
Regarding the pro-western rah-rah, from what I can tell from the trailer, the film is about the Crusade where the Christians get completely destroyed at the Battle of Hattin and lose Jerusalem. They never controlled it again until after WWI, I think. So, not entirely pro-Western, if they stick to the history.
And hey, it's got a king with leprosy in it! I feel leprotic kings always add a certain je ne sais quoi to crusader flicks.
Yeah, and they're promising it'll be balanced but Scott's not exactly the king of subtlety. The last thing we need right now is a film that demonizes muslims. At least this one's not a Bruckheimer production ...
My friend actually saw a really early screening of this film and found it to be one of Ridley's better works.
Other things he mentioned:
- Edward Norton plays the King who has leprosy.
- The cut he saw was over 3 hours.
- The overview of both sides was actually balanced (although he heard that they may cut to make the Christians more heroic).
