I posted about this Haruki Murakami adaptation a couple days back and, lo! A reader just dropped a note pointing out the trailer over at Apple Japan and Indiewire is reporting that the film is the first to land distribution at this year's Sundance Festival, with indie distributor Strand Releasing taking the plunge. That trailer's looking pretty nice, too ... now if only someone would take a good run at A Wild Sheep Chase or another of Murakami's more surreal moments ...
And on an entirely unrelated note: if you have an aversion to cleaning up vomit, or to being vomitted upon, I recommend against having children. Almost four years old now, and no end in sight ...
Thanks to Fannyslacks for the pointer to the trailer.
I've got two at home below the age of 2 (they are 18 months apart)...
It's more of spitting up, but the occasional full-on vomitting can liven up your day.

/waaay off-topic.
The amount of misinformation on this site is incredible. TONY TAKITANI already secured distribution with Strand way before Sundance. In fact, this "news" is already widely known over 2 weeks ago. Though I have to say that TONY TAKITANI is easily one of the best films I've seen in a long while...incredibly moving, with a fantastic score by Ryuichi Sakamoto and perfect acting by the duo.
And please stop with that utterly false rumour about SEVEN SWORDS opening the Cannes Film Fest. The Cannes programmers haven't even SEEN the film yet!
You're right, 'none', this site is terrible. This can not be forgiven! We should leave this site and never come back. Never. You start, ok?
Geert Jan, I second your comments.
The one thing I do appreciate about this site is that the maturity (and common decency level) is pretty high in the commments section is pretty high.
To the children who wish to lower the Bar, there are plenty of movie forums and sites where you will fit in better.

Oh, yes, my grammer is atrocious! Apologies...but you get the idea..

none: have you even read the article linked to at Indiewire? The company didn't announce the pick up until Wednesday. That's from an official press release put out by the company itself. It's possible you heard rumblings about it earlier, because these things do generally take a while to develop but there's no way the actual deal had been done before the middle of this week. If there's 'misinformation' on that score it's not coming from us.
As for Seven Swords, we've got a quote straight from the sales agent the rumor supposedly leaked from right there in the main body of the article. Are you saying you somehow know more than Fortissimo? If so, I'd like to know how because there aren't a whole lot of ways that's possible.
If a rumor appears unlikely we check it out as far as we're able to do so and update our articles here as information becomes available. We've done that with the Seven Swords rumor and have debunked rumors floating around about other films in the past (the story that Sony had sold Kung Fu Hustle to Miramax leaps immediately to mind). So get a grip.
And if people haven't read that Indiweire article yet it's worth noting that they mention Strand has also picked up Tropical Malady ...
You did NOT get a quote straight from the sales agent, because they laughed when I mentioned this "report" about SEVEN SWORDS to them. There's a big difference between "we'd like to open the film at Cannes" and "we're the opening film at Cannes", you know. Please don't propagate rumours that are originated based upon misheard information. Plus, as I have said, the Cannes team has not seen the film yet. So how it can already be selected as opening, especially so early in January, is beyond me.
As for TONY TAKITANI, just because the PR was released to coincide with Sundance doesn't mean the deal hasn't been secured way beforehand. As it always is, the PR are released after-the-fact. In other words, it was NOT bought at Sundance. And in this case you're not the only one saying so, but it's just wrong. As I said, the deal was struck at least a month ago.
If you doubt my veracity, then that is up to you. But I work in the film industry, and I happen to associate with the actual sources of all these materials, so refute them at your own risk.
Actually, you're correct, looking back on the email from Fortissimo, it wasn't from the sales agent, it was from the festivals director. We quoted his response in full. You're free to read it here, and if you'd bother to do so you'd see that we're not making any strong claims in any direction on the subject. We posted the original report from a Chinese newspaper, and followed up directly with a source that would know one way or the other and reported the results. Our final statement on the subject - posted on the 18th - is that time will tell.
I see you're posting from Hong Kong, so if you have some sort of direct connection to the film that would give you access to better information, feel free to share it but as it is I'll take what I've got over some anonymous post. If you want me to take you at your word, then you'd best give me some reason to do so beyond an anonymous posting and claim that you 'work in the film industry'. The guy who cleans the washroom at the local cineplex works 'in the film industry' but that doesn't mean he's got access to particularly good information.
As for Takitani, the company itself says that they signed the deal on Wednesday. Again, I'll take their word over some anonymous poster in Hong Kong. If you want anybody to take you seriously feel free to give reasons why and back them up in some tangible way.
And saying I'm somehow 'at risk' for questioning you is just silly.
I neither represent Fortissimo nor Tsui Hark, and any comments on the subject will seem "official" if I report them or reveal who I am. All I ask is for you to check your sources before reporting them. Yes, I have a close relationship with the sales agent. Yes, I asked them about your "rumour". Their utterly bewildered reaction, verging on laughter, was the result. Take that as you will, and continue reporting it if you wish. After all, this is merely a rumour mill site, and it is not my job to spend time refute every rumour in the sun.
As for TONY TAKITANI, again this was from the lion's mouth nearly 2 weeks ago, when I was made aware of Strand's acquisition of the film.
Anyways, I merely stumbled across this site based upon this false rumour of SEVEN SWORD. No worries, I won't bother to come back again. But here's at least some truth, for a change. Bai Ling is part of the jury for Berlin this year - and you won't have to wait too long for me to be right with this information.
None, what is your problem? Instead of adding information to the site about what you know, why are you coming with this holier than thou attitude? I'll tell you what has me on the verge of laughter, your trying to puff yourself up with the little scraps of info you have. You want to impress me, why not send in some information you have that hasn't been posted on the site before, otherwise do us a favor and get lost!
This is twitchfilm, a fan run website, not the New York Times. I'm sure there is no 'fact checking' department to call and verify everything that gets posted. I would rather have interesting unsubstantiated stories posted even if they can't be immediately verified, thats the fun of following a site like this.
Some people...
Okay ... my last comment on this:
A) it's not 'our rumor' ... we found it in a Chinese newspaper, who cited a quote directly from the film's editor which is a pretty solid foundation.
B) we've questioned the validity right from the start, as would be patently obvious if you'd actually read the article.
C) We did check our sources, which would also be perfectly obvious if you'd actually read the article.
And do you notice the irony inherent in a man who refuses to identify himself criticising people for not checking sources? I'm supposed to take your anonymous - and inaccurate as far as the content on the site is concerned - rantings at face value while you refuse to identify yourself or how you supposedly come by this information? I don't think so.
