I confess. I am a Woody Allen fan. Yes, his personal life is more than a little bit creepy. And, yes, it has been a very long time since he made a good film. But, that being said, when he's on his game nobody does neurosis better and the word from the European festival circuit is that Melinda and Melinda marks a major come back for the man.
Well, the US trailer has just hit online and I've got to say that the hype looks correct. It's smart, it's funny, the cast is fantastic and putting Will Ferrell into the requisite Woody Allen role looks to be a stroke of absolute genius. Check it out here.
I still think woody allen is right ready for another great picture like annie hall, zelig, everything you wanted.....
Melinda Melinda looks really good.
First, claiming that you are woody allen fan shouldn't be a dark confession. The man has made some great films. Perhaps it is a little more risque to admit that I even liked the recent on with Jason Biggs, although the main reason I liked it was Allens character. Lets hope Melinda Melinda pans out nicely...I just realized that I don't really anything else to say, and so the 'first' was quite uncessary....

I realize they were showing the names in alphabetical order, but, I'm so glad to see Chiwetel Ejiofor's name at the top of that list!

Melinda, melinda has opened in Paris- it's the most enjoyable Woody Allen I've seen in a long time. Over dinner two writers take two different approaches to an incident- one sees it as comedy, the other tragedy, the two stories switch back and forth seamlessly, with similar lines, and similar objects, but treated from different angles. it's smart and funny, and just as you are about to squirm in your seat at the excesses of the tragic melinda, you get to shift back to comedy again. and yet the themes are always the same- we always want what we don't have, and what someone else has- The husband in the comedy has the best comic lines- a classic Allenesque anti-hero. Some of Allen's darker vision of human nature still comes through, but it seems to me he has got his sense of humor back, after the long dark misanthropic time.
Some years ago french director Alain Renais made a film called Smoking, No smoking- fwo films, one with cigarettes, one without- everything changed; Unlike Melinda, Melinda- the actors were the same in both versions and they played as separate films, there's an echo of Renais here,
I saw the film in Paris too but i thought it was crap. Woody Allen cooncept failed as the both the comedy and the tragedy wern't comical or tragic just somewhere between. I mean it wasn't the worst film i've seen but as i came out of the cinema i just didn't get it it had no impact on me whatsoever it was like a waste of 2 hours and a couple of euros.
here's the poster for Melinda and Melinda
